“Candles” is a fundraising charity, set up in 2001 and is run by Pam Connock and Dyllys Firth, two local ladies from Skellingthorpe, near Lincoln. They started fundraising after being treated for cancer themselves and decided that they wanted to put something back. The name Candles came about because of the symbolism for life and hope.

The ladies heard about the cancer research that is being undertaken in Lincoln by Professor Eremin, and decided to fundraise for this new research.

Professor Eremin is a world leader in Immunotherapy Research, which means working the body’s immune system to fight disease, rather than surgery or treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

As a result of the research, a groundbreaking treatment for cancer is on trial in Lincolnshire, and all of the patients are from the Lincolnshire area.

The treatment works with cells called ‘dendritic cells’ (DCs). These cells become ‘switched off’ when cancer is present in the body. In Immunotherapy treatment the DCs are removed, switched on, and then given back to the same patient. These cells then fight against cancer, which results in the destruction of the cancer cells.

The research is being carried out in conjunction with the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham. The activating or ‘switching on’ of the cells is carried out in a specialist laboratory in London.

Each trial is funded by charitable donations and there is no funding from the government, drugs companies etc.

To date the Charity has raised in excess of £500,000
